At first quarter, half of the moon's visible face is lit — the right half in the Northern Hemisphere, the left half in the Southern. Despite the name, this phase represents one-quarter of the way through the lunar cycle, not a quarter of the moon's surface. It rises around noon and sets around midnight, giving it a long evening visibility window. Traditional farming and seafaring almanacs often used the first quarter as a scheduling marker.
