A pragmatic Republican governor who expanded Medicaid and balanced budgets, he became a vocal critic of his own party's direction.
John Kasich's political journey began in the Ohio Senate before he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives at just 30 years old. He spent 18 years in Congress, eventually chairing the powerful Budget Committee and playing a key role in balancing the federal budget in the late 1990s. After a stint in investment banking and media, he returned to Ohio politics, winning the governorship in 2010. As governor, he presided over significant job growth, but his most defining and controversial move was accepting federal funds to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, providing health coverage to hundreds of thousands of Ohioans. This put him at odds with more conservative elements of the GOP. His 2016 presidential run, though long-shot, was marked by a message of compassion and fiscal conservatism, and after leaving office, he frequently positioned himself as an independent voice criticizing the Trump-era Republican Party.

John was born in 1952, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
