A charismatic preacher who weaponized social justice rhetoric to build a paranoid authoritarian cult, culminating in a horrific mass murder-suicide.
Jim Jones began as a seemingly progressive minister in 1950s Indianapolis, founding the Peoples Temple which championed racial integration and aid for the poor. This outward-facing altruism masked a growing demand for absolute devotion, as Jones systematically isolated his followers, confiscated assets, and staged fake healings. Relocating to Northern California, he gained political influence before fleeing to Guyana in 1977 to escape mounting scrutiny. There, in the isolated Jonestown settlement, his paranoia metastasized. The community devolved into a prison camp of forced labor and psychological torture. In November 1978, following the murder of a visiting U.S. Congressman, Jones coerced and forced over 900 of his followers, including more than 300 children, to drink cyanide-laced punch in a 'revolutionary suicide' act, a tragedy that seared 'drinking the Kool-Aid' into the lexicon as a warning against blind obedience.
