The grounded rhythm guitarist and secret songwriter who co-founded Guns N' Roses, then walked away from global superstardom to reclaim his musical soul.
Izzy Stradlin was the steady, rolling heartbeat at the center of the Guns N' Roses hurricane. Born Jeffrey Isbell in Lafayette, Indiana, he moved to Los Angeles and, with childhood friend Axl Rose, formed the nucleus of what would become one of rock's most explosive bands. As rhythm guitarist, his gritty, Keith Richards-inspired riffs provided the essential bedrock for Slash's solos on classics like 'Paradise City' and 'Sweet Child o' Mine.' Stradlin was more than a sideman; he was a crucial songwriter, penning or co-writing much of the raw, street-smart material on the landmark 'Appetite for Destruction.' His demeanor—cool, collected, often hidden behind sunglasses—stood in stark contrast to the band's escalating chaos. In 1991, at the absolute zenith of their fame, he quietly quit, citing the intolerable circus of stadium touring. His exit was a seismic blow from which the original lineup never recovered. Post-GNR, Stradlin embarked on a prolific, low-key solo career with his band The Ju Ju Hounds, releasing albums of lean, rootsy rock that echoed his foundational role: less flash, all substance.

Izzy was born in 1962, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
