A Finnish guitar virtuoso who fused neoclassical shred with black metal ferocity, fronting Children of Bodom and inspiring a generation of metal musicians.
Alexi Laiho emerged from the frozen suburbs of Helsinki as a teenage phenom, his fingers a blur of neoclassical arpeggios played with a vicious, punkish intensity. With his band Children of Bodom, named for a infamous Finnish lake murder, he created a sound that was both technically dazzling and savagely catchy. As the band's lead guitarist, vocalist, and primary songwriter, Laiho was a whirlwind of contradictions: his guitar work, influenced by Yngwie Malmsteen, was pristine and complex, while his vocals were a raw, corrosive snarl. The band's breakthrough albums like 'Follow the Reaper' and 'Hate Crew Deathroll' made them outliers who found a massive global audience, bringing European extreme metal to mainstream rock fans. Despite personal struggles and band turmoil, Laiho's commitment to his craft was absolute until his death, his legacy cemented as one of metal's most recognizable and influential guitarists of his era.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Alexi was born in 1979, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
