A Welsh Conservative MP whose political journey ended in independence after a principled stand over Brexit and party loyalty.
Guto Bebb's political career was rooted in Welsh nationalism before it became defined by Conservative Party rebellion. A former business consultant and Welsh language activist with Plaid Cymru in his youth, he made an unlikely transition to the Conservative Party, citing economic pragmatism. Elected MP for Aberconwy in 2010, he was a backbench voice for North Wales before rising to ministerial roles in the Wales Office and later Defence Procurement. His tenure was abruptly reshaped by the Brexit referendum. A staunch Remainer, Bebb became a vocal critic of a no-deal Brexit, a position that put him at odds with his party's leadership. This culminated in his dramatic resignation from the government in 2018 to vote against it. The final break came in 2019 when he had the Conservative whip removed for opposing Prime Minister Boris Johnson's strategy, finishing his parliamentary term as an independent. His story is one of a politician whose convictions, forged in Wales's distinct political landscape, ultimately overrode party allegiance.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Guto was born in 1968, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
