A Tamil Nadu politician and doctor who, as India's youngest Union Health Minister, spearheaded a transformative national anti-tobacco campaign.
Anbumani Ramadoss entered politics through the Pattali Makkal Katchi, a party with strong roots in the Vanniyar community, bringing with him the pragmatism of his medical training. His appointment as Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare in 2004 made him one of the youngest cabinet members in Indian history. His tenure is most remembered for the aggressive implementation of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), which introduced graphic health warnings on packs and stringent restrictions on public smoking, facing down formidable industry opposition. He also pushed for a rural healthcare mission and reforms in medical education. After his ministerial term, he has remained a significant figure in Tamil Nadu politics, leading his party and serving in both houses of Parliament, often focusing on social justice and federalism issues.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Anbumani was born in 1968, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
