A once-touted Israeli wonderkid whose career, which began at Barcelona's famed La Masia, became a globe-trotting quest for fulfillment.
Gai Assulin was once the great hope of Israeli football, a left-footed magician who seemed destined for the very top. As a teenager, he made history by becoming the first Israeli to sign for FC Barcelona, joining their legendary La Masia academy. He trained with Lionel Messi and thrilled for Barcelona's B team, earning a senior debut in the Copa del Rey. But the path to Camp Nou stardom proved elusive, and Assulin embarked on a professional odyssey. There was a move to Manchester City, loans in England and Spain, and subsequent journeys through leagues in Israel, Greece, Kazakhstan, and Italy's lower tiers. His career, while not reaching the stratospheric heights once predicted, reflects the challenging reality for many prodigies and the enduring global search for a place to play the beautiful game.

Gai was born in 1991, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
