A French synth-pop enigma whose hypnotic hit 'Voyage, voyage' became a timeless, borderless anthem of the late 1980s.
Desireless released 'Voyage, voyage' in 1986, a synth-driven single that topped charts across Europe and beyond. Born Claudie Fritsch-Mentrop, she worked as a graphic designer and photographer before adopting her stage name. The song's driving electronic rhythm, ethereal melody, and her detached vocal delivery created a track that felt both futuristic and ancient. The striking video, directed by photographer Bettina Rheims, placed her visually alongside style rebels like Grace Jones. Often labeled a one-hit wonder, that hit possessed rare durability, continually rediscovered by new generations and sampled by other artists. She continued making music, but that one transportive track defined her career.
1946–1964
The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Desireless was born in 1952, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
