A crafty and unpredictable Indigenous playmaker whose late-blooming brilliance revived South Sydney's attack and led them to grand final glory.
Cody Walker's story is one of persistence and dazzling talent finally finding its stage. A proud Indigenous Australian from Casino, New South Wales, Walker's route to the NRL was anything but linear. He bounced through the lower-tier Queensland Cup and New South Wales Cup for years, his creative genius evident but his opportunity elusive. When South Sydney finally gave him a first-grade debut at age 26 in 2016, it was a revelation. Walker instantly transformed the Rabbitohs' attack with his instinctive ball-playing, slick short kicking game, and an uncanny ability to find gaps. Playing primarily at five-eighth, he formed a potent partnership with Adam Reynolds, guiding Souths to the 2021 NRL Grand Final. His game is defined by its spontaneity—a sidestep, a no-look pass, a perfectly weighted grubber—making him one of the most watchful and effective playmakers in the league. Walker's emergence also made him a vital voice for Indigenous representation in the sport, embodying resilience and flair.
