A powerful, old-school English striker who became a cult hero at West Ham United, using his physicality to lead the line for seven seasons in the Premier League.
Carlton Cole embodied a certain type of English center-forward: strong, direct, and a handful for defenders. A product of Chelsea's academy, he found first-team opportunities limited at Stamford Bridge amidst star-studded competition. Loan spells at Charlton and Aston Villa followed before he found a true home at West Ham United in 2006. At Upton Park, he blossomed into a key figure, using his frame to hold up play and bring teammates into the game, forming effective partnerships with the likes of Craig Bellamy and Andy Carroll. While not a prolific scorer, his work rate and physical presence made him a fan favorite. He helped the Hammers secure promotion and stabilize in the top flight, peaking with an 11-goal season in 2012. After a brief stint abroad, he returned for a final season in claret and blue, leaving as a player who gave his all for the shirt.

Carlton was born in 1983, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
