A Minneapolis taxi driver plucked from obscurity to deliver an Oscar-nominated debut as a chillingly real Somali pirate.
Barkhad Abdi played pirate leader Abduwali Muse opposite Tom Hanks in 'Captain Phillips,' earning a BAFTA win and Oscar nomination. Born in Mogadishu, he fled Somalia's civil war as a child, settling in Minnesota. He was driving a taxi and studying business when a local casting call for Somali speakers went out. With no acting experience, he auditioned and landed the lead antagonist role. His portrayal was raw and devoid of Hollywood villainy, showing desperate humanity. His journey proved that authentic casting can uncover profound talent.

Barkhad was born in 1985, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
