Biography

Bob Watson's baseball life was a study in substance and groundbreaking progress. As a player, he was a model of consistency, a line-drive hitter who compiled a .295 career average over 19 seasons, primarily with the Houston Astros. He was tough, smart, and respected. But his deeper impact came after he hung up his cleats. Transitioning into front-office work, Watson climbed the ranks with the Astros and later the New York Yankees. In 1995, he was appointed General Manager of the Houston Astros, becoming one of the first African Americans to hold that title in MLB. His crowning achievement came with the Yankees, where as GM he built the team that won the 1996 World Series and oversaw the 1998 squad considered one of the greatest ever, though he had departed before that season. Watson's career was a quiet trailblazing, proving excellence in every facet of the game.

Baby Boomers

1946–1964

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.

Bob was born in 1946, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
