A former basketball player who pivoted to politics, leading global Jewish organizations and shaping the connection between Israel and the Diaspora.
Ze'ev Bielski's path to leadership was unconventional. Before entering politics, he was a professional athlete, playing in Israel's national basketball league. This competitive spirit translated into a decades-long public service career focused on community building. As mayor of Ra'anana, he oversaw its transformation into a thriving, family-oriented city. His most significant impact came on the world stage as Chairman of the Jewish Agency and the World Zionist Organization, where he worked tirelessly to strengthen the bonds between Israel and Jewish communities abroad, particularly during times of crisis. A founder of The Israel Forum, Bielski championed direct people-to-people connections, believing the future of the Jewish people relied on practical engagement between the young generations of the Diaspora and Israel.
1946–1964
The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Ze'ev was born in 1949, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
