The Compton storyteller who turned West Coast gangsta rap into a raw, chart-topping diary of street life and survival.
Born Keenon Dequan Ray Jackson in Compton, California, YG’s music is a direct transmission from the streets that raised him. His breakthrough, the brash and unapologetic 'Toot It and Boot It,' was just a prelude to a career built on vivid, sometimes confrontational, narrative. His 2014 debut studio album, 'My Krazy Life,' was a critical and commercial landmark, a cinematic and sonically cohesive project produced largely by DJ Mustard that defined the 'ratchet' sound of the mid-2010s. YG’s identity is rooted in his Bloods affiliation, a theme he explores with complexity rather than glorification, and his work often serves as political commentary, most notably on the protest anthem 'FDT.' He has maintained his relevance through high-profile collaborations and a steadfast commitment to his uncompromising West Coast perspective.
1981–1996
The first digital natives. Grew up with the internet, came of age during 9/11 and the 2008 crash. Highly educated, deeply indebted, slower to marry and buy houses. Redefined work, identity, and what it means to be an adult.
YG was born in 1990, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
