A Kenyan distance-running queen whose late-career surge saw her conquer Olympic gold and world titles with fierce, tactical brilliance.
Vivian Cheruiyot's longevity at the summit of distance running is a story of patience and perfectly timed peaks. She first appeared on the global stage as a teenage Olympian in 2000, but it was in her late twenties and thirties that she truly dominated. Unlike many of her compatriots known for front-running, Cheruiyot was a racer, a tactician with a devastating kick. She piled up world championship gold in the 5000m and 10000m, but Olympic glory eluded her until her fourth Games. In Rio 2016, at age 32, she finally struck gold in the 5000m with a commanding Olympic record performance, adding a silver in the 10,000m. Her career is a masterclass in pacing, both within races and across a decades-long journey, proving that in the marathon of a career, a strong finishing kick is everything.

Vivian was born in 1983, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
