A fiery midfield general who captained Serbia and achieved a unique treble with Inter Milan, now forging a demanding coaching legacy.
Dejan Stanković's career is a map of Balkan football history, marked by loyalty, fierce pride, and a rare versatility. Emerging from Red Star Belgrade's famed academy, he was a prodigy, making his debut at 16. His talent and combative style in midfield made him a symbol of Serbian football's resilience during a turbulent era. A move to Italy defined his club career: first at Lazio, where he won a Scudetto, and then at Inter Milan, where he became a cornerstone of José Mourinho's historic treble-winning side in 2010. Stanković wasn't the flashiest player, but his engine, tactical intelligence, and thunderous long-range strikes made him indispensable. As captain of the national team through its transition from Serbia and Montenegro to independent Serbia, he embodied its fighting spirit. Retiring in 2013, he moved into management with the same intensity, taking the helm at his boyhood club, Red Star Belgrade, and imposing a disciplined, modern style aimed at restoring its European stature.
