An Australian driver who conquered the 24 Hours of Le Mans, finding his greatest triumphs on the endurance circuits of the world.
Vern Schuppan's career in motorsport is a map of global ambition, plotted from the dirt tracks of South Australia to the pinnacle of sports car racing. He cut his teeth in Formula Ford and Formula 2 in Europe, earning a handful of Formula One starts in the mid-1970s. While his F1 stint was brief, it was in the grueling world of endurance racing where his talent truly shone. He became a fixture at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, driving for legendary teams like Porsche. His persistence paid off in 1983 when he, alongside Al Holbert and Hurley Haywood, piloted a Porsche 956 to an outright victory at the French classic. Schuppan also tackled the Indianapolis 500 multiple times, with a best finish of third in 1981. After retiring from driving, he channeled his expertise into designing and building his own car, the Schuppan 962CR, a road-going version of the dominant Porsche race car, cementing his legacy as a driver-engineer who understood speed from every angle.
