A Scottish Labour politician who navigated the complex world of energy policy from the backbenches to the shadow ministerial desk.
Tom Greatrex entered Parliament in 2010 as part of a cohort of Labour MPs facing the difficult task of opposition. Representing the Rutherglen and Hamilton West constituency, he quickly established himself as a diligent and policy-focused parliamentarian with a particular interest in energy, a crucial sector for Scotland and the UK. His expertise was recognized when he was appointed Shadow Energy Minister in 2011, a role he held for four years. In this position, Greatrex engaged with the intricate challenges of nuclear power, renewable energy subsidies, and household fuel bills, arguing for a balanced and secure energy strategy. His parliamentary career was cut short in the 2015 SNP surge in Scotland, but his tenure demonstrated a commitment to substantive, often technically complex, policy work away from the media glare.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Tom was born in 1974, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
