A sharp-elbowed political operator who reached Israel's highest office, his tenure was ultimately defined by war and a dramatic fall from grace.
Ehud Olmert's career was a long ascent through the rough-and-tumble of Israeli politics, marked by pragmatism and a hawkish reputation. As Mayor of Jerusalem in the 1990s, he oversaw significant expansion, but his policies in East Jerusalem were deeply controversial. Rising through the Likud party, he became Prime Minister in 2006 after Ariel Sharon's stroke. His administration was immediately tested by the Second Lebanon War and later a major military operation in Gaza. In a surprising political pivot, he launched serious peace negotiations with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, offering concessions previous leaders had avoided. However, his time in office was cut short by a cascade of corruption allegations. After leaving politics, he was convicted and served a prison sentence, a stark conclusion to a life spent at the center of Israeli power.

Ehud was born in 1945, placing them squarely in The Silent Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
