Biography

Taher Elgamal's journey from Egypt to Silicon Valley shaped the very fabric of the internet's security layer. In the 1980s, while working at Hewlett-Packard, he published a paper that would become legendary in cryptographic circles: the ElGamal encryption system. This work provided a practical method for public-key cryptography and, most lastingly, formed the basis for the Digital Signature Algorithm (DSA), a U.S. government standard. His influence moved from theory to practice when he became the chief scientist at Netscape during the browser wars, where the need for secure online transactions was exploding. Later, as a founder, CEO, and CTO at various security firms and Salesforce, Elgamal shifted from pure cryptography to building the commercial infrastructure of trust. He is less a public figure than an architect; his code operates silently in the background of countless secure connections, a testament to his vision of a web where business and communication could be conducted safely.

Baby Boomers

1946–1964

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.

Taher was born in 1955, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
