A Chinese basketball pioneer whose brief NBA stint is forever highlighted by a coveted championship ring earned with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Sun Yue's story is a unique footnote in the globalization of the NBA. A tall, skilled guard with exceptional vision, he was a star in China and a second-round draft pick who carried the hopes of a nation looking for its next Yao Ming. His NBA career, however, was fleeting—just ten regular-season games for the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2008-09 season. Yet, his timing was impeccable. As a deep reserve on a powerhouse Lakers team led by Kobe Bryant, he practiced against the best and, when the team won the title, became only the second Chinese-born player to earn an NBA championship ring. This moment, more than his on-court minutes, cemented his place in basketball history as a symbol of access and a testament to being in the right room at the right time.

Sun was born in 1985, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
