A first-generation K-pop idol who helped pioneer the genre's global reach as the charismatic leader of the iconic girl group Baby V.O.X.
Shim Eun-jin stepped onto the stage at the dawn of modern K-pop, becoming the founding leader of Baby V.O.X in 1997. The group's path was not immediate fame; they weathered early struggles and member changes before their breakthrough. Eun-jin, with her sharp dance skills and distinctive husky voice, became a focal point as Baby V.O.X embraced a bold, sometimes controversial, concept that mixed pop with hip-hop and even hints of techno. Their hit 'Get Up' and later forays into the Chinese market made them one of the first K-pop groups to achieve significant international fame. After the group disbanded, Eun-jin deliberately pivoted, shedding the idol image to build a credible career as a television and musical theatre actress, proving her versatility extended far beyond the girl group stage.
1981–1996
The first digital natives. Grew up with the internet, came of age during 9/11 and the 2008 crash. Highly educated, deeply indebted, slower to marry and buy houses. Redefined work, identity, and what it means to be an adult.
Shim was born in 1981, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
