Biography

Shaolin Sándor Liu, born in Budapest to a Chinese father and Hungarian mother, became the embodiment of a sporting fairy tale for a nation with little winter sports tradition. He and his younger brother, Shaoang, were thrust into the global spotlight at the 2018 PyeongChang Games. There, as part of Hungary's 5000m relay team, Liu skated a critical leg to help secure a stunning gold medal—the first ever for Hungary at the Winter Olympics. His aggressive, tactical skating style, perfected under the guidance of a Chinese coach in Budapest, made him a relay specialist of the highest order. While his individual pursuits saw moments of brilliance, his legacy is cemented in those team triumphs. In a surprising turn, he began representing China in 2023, adding a complex new chapter to his unique transnational story in a sport defined by split-second decisions and blurred boundaries.

Millennials

1981–1996

The first digital natives. Grew up with the internet, came of age during 9/11 and the 2008 crash. Highly educated, deeply indebted, slower to marry and buy houses. Redefined work, identity, and what it means to be an adult.

Shaolin was born in 1995, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
