Biography

Benoit Mandelbrot was a mathematical rebel who saw patterns where others saw noise. Born in Warsaw in 1924 to a Lithuanian Jewish family, his life was shaped by displacement during World War II, an experience that perhaps sharpened his eye for irregular structures. He worked at IBM's research center for much of his career, a position that gave him the freedom to explore an astonishing range of phenomena—from cotton price fluctuations to the shape of coastlines and the distribution of galaxies. He realized these seemingly random forms shared a common property: self-similarity, where small parts resemble the whole. In 1975, he gave this geometry a name—fractals. His eponymous Mandelbrot Set, a dizzyingly complex image generated from a simple formula, became an emblem of chaos theory and a bridge between mathematics and art. Mandelbrot’s work fundamentally changed how scientists model everything from financial markets to the human lungs.
