The powerhouse vocalist and drummer who, with Jesse F. Keeler, forged the blistering dance-punk sound of Death from Above, a duo that refused to be ignored.
Sebastien Grainger is the human engine behind one of rock's most potent minimalist assaults. As one-half of Death from Above 1979, he didn't just sing—he roared and crooned over his own thunderous drumming, creating a wall of sound that felt impossibly large for just two people. Born in Vancouver and raised in Toronto, Grainger's musical partnership with bassist Jesse F. Keeler was alchemical, merging punk aggression with disco and dance music's rhythmic pulse on their seminal debut, 'You're a Woman, I'm a Machine.' After the duo's initial breakup, he explored a rootsier, more melodic direction with his band The Mountains, showcasing a versatility often overshadowed by DFA's intensity. The reunion of Death from Above in 2011 proved the enduring power of their formula, with Grainger's evolved, more controlled vocal delivery adding new dimensions to their chaotic live shows and later records.
1965–1980
The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Sebastien was born in 1979, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
