A slick-skating Finnish defenceman who overcame a late draft position to claim a top rookie honor in the NHL.
Sami Niku's path to the NHL was a lesson in perseverance. Selected with the 198th overall pick—a position where few prospects ever make an impact—he used his elite skating and offensive instincts as his ticket. He developed in Finland's Liiga, winning a championship with JYP, before crossing the Atlantic. His breakthrough came in the 2017-18 season with the Manitoba Moose of the AHL, where his point production from the blue line was impossible to ignore, earning him the league's award for best defenceman. That performance paved his way to the Winnipeg Jets, where he showcased his smooth transitional game. While securing a permanent NHL spot proved challenging, his journey from a seventh-round afterthought to a top minor-league star remains a notable achievement.

Sami was born in 1996, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
