The cerebral architect behind Tears for Fears, crafting anthemic pop that explored psychology and defined the sound of an era.
Roland Orzabal, with his school friend Curt Smith, formed Tears for Fears in the early 1980s, channeling post-punk energy and a fascination with primal scream therapy into sophisticated, chart-topping pop. As the band's main songwriter and co-vocalist, Orzabal was the driving creative force behind albums like 'The Hurting' and the monumental 'Songs from the Big Chair', which spun off global hits like 'Shout' and 'Everybody Wants to Rule the World'. His musical ambition expanded on the psychedelic-tinged 'The Seeds of Love'. Beyond the band, he produced for other artists, most notably helping to launch the career of singer Oleta Adams. In a surprising pivot, he later authored a novel, showcasing a literary side to his artistic mind.

Roland was born in 1961, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
