Biography

Pyrrhus of Epirus was a warrior-king whose life reads like a classical tragedy of immense talent thwarted by greater forces. A distant cousin of Alexander the Great, he spent his youth as a political pawn and exile, forging his military genius in the mercenary armies of the Mediterranean's post-Alexander fracture. Restored to his throne, he dreamed of an empire in the west. Answering a call from the Greek city of Tarentum in southern Italy, he clashed with the rising power of Rome. At Heraclea and Asculum, his phalanxes and war elephants won the field, but the Roman legions inflicted staggering losses on his professional army—losses he could not replace. It was after Asculum that he reportedly sighed, 'Another such victory and I am undone.' This strategic defeat defined his legacy. He later fought and died in a petty street fight in Argos, a brilliant tactician who ultimately could not master the politics of survival.
