An Irish comic genius who turned bewildered innocence into an art form, stealing scenes as a lovably clueless priest.
Ardal O'Hanlon created Father Dougal McGuire on "Father Ted," a masterclass in wide-eyed, blissful ignorance. He emerged from Dublin's stand-up scene in the early 1990s as a founding member of the comedy group Mr. Trellis. The role made him famous across Ireland and Britain. He refused to be pigeonholed, pivoting to play a bumbling superhero in "My Hero" and later Detective Inspector Jack Mooney on "Death in Paradise." He has maintained a sharp stand-up career and authored novels. O'Hanlon's comedy finds depth in the simple and humanity in the absurd. He won a BAFTA for his work on "Father Ted."
1965–1980
The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Ardal was born in 1965, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
