A charismatic and controversial Portuguese political figure who became Prime Minister in a flash, only to see his coalition crumble just as quickly.
Pedro Santana Lopes has lived a political life defined by dramatic ascents and abrupt declines. A lawyer by profession, he rose through the ranks of the center-right Social Democratic Party (PSD), cultivating a media-savvy, populist style that set him apart from the party's traditionalists. His moment at the summit was brief but intense: in 2004, following the resignation of Prime Minister Durão Barroso for a European Commission role, Santana Lopes was appointed to lead the government. His tenure lasted just 119 days, a period marked by internal party strife and policy missteps that led to the collapse of his coalition. Voters delivered a stinging rebuke in the ensuing election. He later reinvented himself as a successful mayor of Figueira da Foz, proving his enduring local appeal, but his national legacy remains that of a brilliant campaigner whose premiership was one of the shortest and most turbulent in modern Portuguese history.

Pedro was born in 1956, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
