A Cameroonian midfielder whose tragic death on the pitch sparked a global conversation about athlete heart safety and emergency protocols.
Patrick Ekeng (1990–2016) played defensive midfield for Cameroon. He trained in Cameroon before moving to clubs in Switzerland, Romania, and finally Dinamo Bucharest. For the Cameroonian national team, he earned two caps and appeared at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. On May 6, 2016, during a league match, Ekeng collapsed on the field at age 26. He suffered a cardiac arrest. Medical staff attempted resuscitation, but he died at the hospital. His death was not an isolated event, but it forced football's governing bodies, clubs, and medical professionals to review cardiac screening for athletes and emergency response protocols at sporting events worldwide.
