A volcanic force of rhythm who has become a central pillar of Europe's free jazz and improvisation scene.
Paal Nilssen-Love approaches the drum kit not as a timekeeper but as a landscape architect, constructing dense, energetic, and surprisingly melodic topographies of sound. Hailing from Norway's rich experimental music tradition, he emerged as a powerhouse collaborator, his explosive technique and boundless creativity making him a first-call drummer for giants of free jazz like Peter Brötzmann and Mats Gustafsson. He co-founded The Thing, a trio that violently and joyfully collides jazz with punk and noise rock. Beyond sheer power, Nilssen-Love is a master of dynamics and textural exploration, using his vast collection of percussion to create orchestral depth. He drives bands with a propulsive, almost physical energy, cementing his role as a key instigator in keeping European free music urgent and alive.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Paal was born in 1974, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
