The long-ruling president who has wielded Azerbaijan's oil wealth to project national power while maintaining an iron grip at home.
Ilham Aliyev assumed the presidency of Azerbaijan in 2003, succeeding his father, Heydar Aliyev, in a transition that cemented a political dynasty. Educated in Moscow and steeped in his father's Soviet-era political network, he has presided over a period defined by petrodollar-fueled transformation. Baku's skyline has been remade with glittering towers, while the country's military, buoyed by energy revenues, has grown in capability. His tenure has been marked by a decisive victory in the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war, a moment of profound national triumph. Internationally, he has positioned Azerbaijan as a strategic energy partner to Europe and a host of global events. At home, however, his rule is characterized by centralized authority, suppression of political dissent, and tight control over media and civil society.

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Ilham was born in 1961, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
