A Moldovan intellectual and diplomat who has spent decades navigating the delicate politics of his country's European aspirations and internal divisions.
Oleg Serebrian embodies the scholar-diplomat, using a deep background in political science and literature to steer Moldova through its post-Soviet identity crisis. Born in Chișinău, he built an early career as a writer and academic, his work steeped in the cultural and geopolitical tensions of the region. This intellectual foundation paved his way into diplomacy and politics, where he became a key figure in Moldova's complex relationship with the breakaway region of Transnistria. His role as Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration placed him at the heart of one of Europe's frozen conflicts, tasked with a near-impossible mission of bridge-building. Beyond bilateral disputes, Serebrian also operated on a broader stage, leading the Latin Union and later serving as Ambassador to Turkey, positioning Moldova between East and West with a quiet, persistent pragmatism.
1965–1980
The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Oleg was born in 1969, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
