A journeyman pitcher whose resilience and global baseball odyssey made him a beloved figure far beyond the major league stadiums.
Born in Brooklyn, Nelson Figueroa's baseball path was anything but linear. Drafted by the Mets, he didn't debut for them until a decade later, a delay that set the tone for a career defined by perseverance. He became the quintessential baseball nomad, pitching for six MLB clubs and etching his name into the lore of international leagues, most notably in Taiwan where he became a star for the Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions. His arsenal, a five-pitch mix headlined by a sharp slider, was less about overpowering velocity and more about savvy and craft. After retiring, he seamlessly transitioned to the broadcast booth, offering sharp, relatable analysis for the Mets, a role that cemented his status as a trusted voice who had seen every side of the professional game.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Nelson was born in 1974, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
