Biography

Michael Anthony Epstein was a scientist defined by a moment of prepared curiosity. As a pathologist at London's Middlesex Hospital, he attended a lecture in 1961 about a curious childhood lymphoma common in parts of Africa. Intrigued, he asked the speaker for tumor samples, which were duly sent from Uganda in a thermos flask. For two years, Epstein and his graduate student Yvonne Barr meticulously searched those cells. The breakthrough came on a Friday afternoon in 1964, when Epstein, peering through an electron microscope, spotted peculiar herpes-like viral particles. This was the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a revelation that forged the crucial link between viral infection and human cancers like Burkitt's lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Knighted for his work, Epstein spent his career championing viral oncology, transforming a once-speculative field into a cornerstone of modern medicine.

Key Achievements

  • Co-discovered the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in 1964, identifying it in cells from Burkitt's lymphoma.
  • Provided the first definitive proof that a virus could cause cancer in humans.
  • His work established the foundation for the entire field of viral oncology.
  • Was knighted in 1991 for his services to medical research.

Did You Know?

The virus was almost named the 'Epstein-Barr-Achong virus' to include lab technician Bert Achong, but the shorter name stuck.

He served as a pilot in the Royal Air Force during World War II.

He was an avid birdwatcher and served as President of the British Trust for Ornithology.

The original tumor biopsy samples he studied were preserved in a thermos and flown from Uganda to London.

“The whole thing was a lesson in how important it is to go to meetings and listen to other people.”

— Anthony Epstein
