A trailblazing Australian big man whose powerful game carried him from the Outback to the NBA, becoming a pioneer for Indigenous basketball.
Hailing from the remote community of Bamaga in the Torres Strait, Nathan Jawai's journey to professional basketball reads like a modern-day odyssey. Discovered relatively late, his sheer size and soft touch around the basket earned him a spot at the Australian Institute of Sport, a launching pad for the country's top prospects. Dubbed 'Baby Shaq' for his formidable frame and footwork, he dominated the Australian NBL with the Cairns Taipans, which led to his historic selection in the 2008 NBA Draft. While his time with the Toronto Raptors and Minnesota Timberwolves was limited, the significance of his presence was immense; he was the first Indigenous Australian to play in the NBA. Jawai then crafted a formidable and respected career across Europe's top leagues, winning championships in Serbia and Spain, before returning home to claim an NBL title with the Perth Wildcats. More than his stats, Jawai's legacy is that of a pathfinder, inspiring a generation of young Indigenous athletes with his quiet strength and globe-trotting success.

The first digital natives. Grew up with the internet, came of age during 9/11 and the 2008 crash. Highly educated, deeply indebted, slower to marry and buy houses. Redefined work, identity, and what it means to be an adult.
Nathan was born in 1986, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
