Biography

Miklós Rózsa's music always carried the accent of his homeland. Trained in Leipzig and steeped in the Hungarian folk modes of Bartók and Kodály, he began a successful career in Europe writing for films and the concert stage. The rise of Nazism sent him westward, first to London and then to Hollywood, where his dense, thematic, and powerfully dramatic style found a perfect canvas. He became the sound of historical spectacle and psychological noir, scoring films like 'The Thief of Bagdad,' 'Double Indemnity,' and 'Ben-Hur' with a seriousness that treated the cinema as a modern opera. Rózsa lived what he called a 'double life,' meticulously dividing his year between film work and composing absolute music. His concert works—concertos, string quartets, a symphony—are cut from the same cloth: richly melodic, rhythmically driving, and unapologetically tonal in an age of avant-garde experimentation. He never abandoned the musical language of his youth, instead refining it into a personal idiom that gave Hollywood a new depth of musical intelligence and gave the concert hall a direct, emotional voice.

The Greatest Generation

1901–1927

Grew up during the Depression, fought World War II, and built the postwar economic boom. Defined by shared sacrifice, institutional trust, and a belief that hard work and loyalty would be rewarded.

Miklós was born in 1907, placing them squarely in The Greatest Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
