The foundational bassist of HIM, whose melodic, driving lines and co-founding role helped craft the signature 'love metal' sound that conquered Finland and beyond.
Mige, born Mikko Paananen, is the quiet architect behind one of Finland's biggest musical exports. Meeting vocalist Ville Valo at a music-oriented high school in Helsinki, the two formed HIM in 1991, with Mige's bass providing the crucial, melodic low end around which their gothic rock sound was built. His playing style—often more lyrical and prominent than typical rock bass—became a hallmark of the band's 'love metal' aesthetic. After an early hiatus for his compulsory military service, he rejoined Valo to resurrect HIM in 1995, anchoring the lineup through its entire 26-year run. While Valo commanded the spotlight, Mige was the steady, consistent force on stage and in the studio, his contributions essential to hits like 'Join Me in Death' and 'Wings of a Butterfly.' Through eight studio albums and relentless touring, he helped build HIM from Helsinki club gigs to international recognition, including a gold record in the United States, before the band's deliberate final curtain in 2017.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Mige was born in 1974, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
