The baritone voice of Finnish love metal, whose melancholic anthems with HIM painted romance in shades of black and blood red.
Ville Valo fronted HIM, the Finnish band that coined the term 'Love Metal.' His deep baritone and lyrics weaving love, death, and despair through biblical imagery defined a sound that fused gothic atmosphere with hard rock hooks. The album 'Razorblade Romance' broke internationally in the early 2000s, carrying Valo's aesthetic—long dark hair, eyeliner, a world-weary gaze—into global recognition. His songwriting, built on poignant heartache, secured a dedicated following. After HIM dissolved, Valo launched a solo project, VV, continuing his melancholic style. Born in 1976, he rose from Helsinki's underground clubs to become the genre's unlikely heartthrob.
1965–1980
The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Ville was born in 1976, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
