The flamboyant Finnish frontman who fused punk energy with glam-rock style, becoming a foundational influence on the '80s Hollywood rock scene.
Michael Monroe is a human explosion of glitter, sweat, and saxophone. Born Matti Fagerholm in Helsinki, he shed his given name to become the androgynous, high-kicking heart of Hanoi Rocks, a band that in the early 1980s created a seismic blend of New York punk attitude and London glam-rock theatrics. With Monroe's raw vocals, chaotic stage presence, and unexpected proficiency on sax and harmonica, the band cultivated a cult following that would prove deeply influential, directly inspiring the look and sound of bands like Guns N' Roses. Tragedy struck with the death of drummer Razzle in 1984, fracturing the band, but Monroe refused to fade. He embarked on a relentless solo career, collaborating with a who's who of rock royalty and releasing albums that consistently championed the raw, rebellious spirit of rock 'n' roll. More than just a survivor, Monroe remains a purist and a performer, a living link to an era where rock was dangerous, glamorous, and utterly alive.
