Biography

Masatoshi Gündüz Ikeda’s life was a narrative of displacement and intellectual triumph. Born in Japan, his early studies were disrupted by World War II. A turning point came when he attended a lecture by the visiting German mathematician Helmut Hasse, which ignited his passion for algebraic number theory. Pursuing this passion, he moved to Germany for his doctorate. In 1960, another lecture, this time by Turkey's Cahit Arf, drew him to Ankara. He embraced his new home, becoming a Turkish citizen and adding ‘Gündüz’ to his name. At the Middle East Technical University, he established a formidable research school, guiding a generation of Turkish mathematicians in the complex realms of class field theory and Galois cohomology. His work, characterized by deep insight and elegance, earned him international respect. Ikeda became a symbol of how a singular scientific intellect could transcend national origins to enrich the academic life of an adopted country.

The Greatest Generation

1901–1927

Grew up during the Depression, fought World War II, and built the postwar economic boom. Defined by shared sacrifice, institutional trust, and a belief that hard work and loyalty would be rewarded.

Masatoshi was born in 1926, placing them squarely in The Greatest Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
