A Japanese entertainment polymath who conquered pop charts as 'Matchy' before shifting gears to become a powerhouse in professional motorsport.
Masahiko Kondō, known universally as Matchy, engineered one of the most dramatic mid-life career pivots in show business. In the 1980s, he was a colossal pop star, a member of the popular Tanokin Trio, whose heartthrob image and hit songs made him a fixture on television and in music charts. But beneath the idol persona burned a different passion: speed. He transitioned from celebrity hobbyist to a serious semi-professional racing driver, competing in Japan's Super Taikyu series. His second act, however, proved even more significant. In 2000, he founded Kondo Racing, applying his fame's financial leverage and a sharp business mind to build a genuinely competitive team. Under his ownership, Kondo Racing grew into a staple of Japan's premier circuits, Super GT and Super Formula, fielding cars for top drivers and winning major races. Kondō reshaped his narrative from pop idol to respected racing entrepreneur, proving his depth lay not just in performance, but in building lasting institutions within the high-octane world of motorsport.

Masahiko was born in 1964, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
