An actor who turned the role of a merciless karate sensei into a decades-spanning portrait of villainy and surprising redemption.
Martin Kove built a career on formidable presence, often playing tough cops and intimidating heavies, but it was one role that etched him into pop culture permanence. As John Kreese, the sinister sensei of the Cobra Kai dojo in 'The Karate Kid', he created a villain who was less a cartoon and more a chillingly believable product of warped discipline and toxic masculinity. With his steely gaze and mantra of 'No mercy', Kreese became the perfect foil for Mr. Miyagi's wisdom. Decades later, the series 'Cobra Kai' resurrected the character, allowing Kove to explore Kreese's twisted psychology, Vietnam War background, and even glimpses of vulnerability, transforming a classic 80s antagonist into a complex, ongoing study. Beyond the dojo, Kove's long run on 'Cagney & Lacey' and roles in films from 'Rambo II' to 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' showcase a durable and recognizable character actor.

Martin was born in 1946, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
