Biography

Anders Anshelm Kannisto's story is etched into the turbulent early years of Finnish independence. As a Social Democratic Party member, he was part of the historic first parliamentary cohort elected under universal suffrage in 1907, representing the working people of Mikkeli. His political career in the legislature was, however, cut short by the violent schism of the Finnish Civil War in 1918. Kannisto sided with the Reds, joining the workers' militia known as the Red Guard. Captured by the White forces at the war's outset, his fate shifted from legislator to convict. In the war's aftermath, he was found guilty of treason and sentenced to eight years imprisonment, a stark penalty reflecting the era's bitter divisions. Released in a general amnesty in 1921, his later life remains less documented, but his trajectory embodies the profound personal costs paid by those caught in the nation's violent birth pangs.

The Gilded Age

1860–1882

Born during or after the Civil War, they built industrial America — the railroads, the steel mills, the first skyscrapers. An era of massive wealth, massive inequality, and the belief that the future belonged to whoever could build it fastest.

A. was born in 1876, placing them squarely in The Gilded Age. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
