A fierce Swiss defender turned fiery manager, known for his uncompromising passion on the pitch and a short, tumultuous stint in North American soccer.
Marco Schällibaum's career in football is defined by a combative spirit that translated from the turf to the touchline. As a player in the 1980s and 90s, he was a tenacious, hard-tackling defender for FC Zürich and Neuchâtel Xamax, earning a reputation for his intensity and leadership. That same fiery temperament became his signature as a manager. He cut his teeth coaching in the Swiss lower leagues before landing the top job at the Montreal Impact in Major League Soccer in 2013. His tenure there was a whirlwind: he led the team to its first Canadian Championship but also set an MLS record for coach ejections, his passionate protests making him a cult figure. After returning to Switzerland, he became a crisis manager of sorts, taking over historic clubs like FC Basel and Grasshopper Club Zürich at difficult moments, often tasked with steering them away from relegation with his old-school, motivational approach.

Marco was born in 1962, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
