A versatile Danish rider who conquered the national road race before embracing the raw challenge of gravel cycling's expanding frontier.
Mads Würtz Schmidt carved out a solid decade-long career on the WorldTour pavement, known for his resilience and powerful sprint from a reduced group. He turned professional with the Danish team Cult Energy and later rode for Katusha-Alpecin and Israel-Premier Tech. His career highlight came on home roads in 2021 when he launched a perfectly timed attack to win the Danish National Road Race Championships, earning the coveted red and white jersey. That victory cemented his status as a durable classics-style rider. After the 2023 season, Schmidt made a significant pivot, stepping away from the WorldTour to join the off-road discipline of gravel racing. This move places him at the forefront of a growing segment of the sport, trading the structured peloton for adventurous, self-supported long-distance events, applying his elite engine to a new and unpredictable terrain.
