The raw-voiced frontperson of Life of Agony, whose personal journey of gender identity has been as fearless and public as the band's intense music.
Keith Caputo emerged from the New York hardcore scene as the founding vocalist of Life of Agony, a band that fused metal's weight with hardcore's urgency and alternative rock's melody. Their 1993 debut, 'River Runs Red,' a concept album about teenage despair, became a cult classic, powered by Caputo's uniquely strained and emotional vocal delivery. The band's success was punctuated by hiatuses and reunions, with Caputo also pursuing solo work that explored more melodic and personal terrain. In 2011, Caputo came out as transgender, transitioning and performing under the name Mina Caputo, becoming a visible transgender figure in heavy music. In a further testament to a lifelong exploration of self, Caputo announced in late 2024 an intention to detransition. Through all of this, the core of Caputo's artistic power—a voice that channels profound anguish and catharsis—has remained a constant, compelling force.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Keith was born in 1973, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
