A Finnish goaltender whose early promise made him the highest-drafted European at his position, anchoring nets in Atlanta and Dallas for over a decade.
Kari Lehtonen was selected second overall by the Atlanta Thrashers in 2002, the highest-drafted European goalie in NHL history. His technical, fluid style made him the Thrashers' workhorse behind a frequently struggling team. A trade to the Dallas Stars in 2010 offered a reset, where he evolved into a steady presence for playoff-contending squads. He logged 14 seasons and over 400 games as a starting netminder, his durability and calm demeanor bridging the post-lockout NHL into the 2010s.
